The starter kit — under $30, everything you need to smoke flower

  1. Grinder — 4-piece aluminum, ~$15. Ryot, Space Case, or a generic. Skip electric grinders (loud, expensive, unnecessary).
  2. Papers — 1¼" size, hemp or rice. RAW Classic hemp is the default. ~$3 per pack of 50.
  3. Filters (crutches/tips) — pre-rolled RAW tips or a booklet of filter paper. ~$2-3 per pack.
  4. Lighter — a basic Bic or a hemp wick if you want cleaner combustion. ~$2-5.
  5. Storage jar — a small glass jar with a tight lid. Old spice jars work. ~$1-5.

Total: ~$25-30. This kit works for years.

Grinders — what to look for

TypePriceNotes
2-piece$5-10Basic — grinds flower, no kief collection. Fine for occasional use.
4-piece with kief catcher$15-30The standard. Grinding chamber + storage chamber + fine mesh + kief chamber. Best value.
Titanium / premium ($60+)$60-150Nicer feel, longer life, sharper teeth. The flower comes out the same. Buy if you grind daily.
Electric grinders$40+Loud, batteries drain, quality varies. Most heavy users prefer manual. Skip unless you have hand mobility issues.

The most important spec is sharp teeth and firm magnets. Cheap grinders lose their teeth after a few months.

Rolling papers & filters

  • Sizes: 1¼" (most common, ~78mm), King Size (~110mm, larger joints), and slim variants.
  • Materials: hemp (thicker, easier to roll, mild flavor), rice (thinner, cleaner burn, harder to roll), unbleached vs bleached (unbleached is more common now), flavored (peach, grape — avoid unless you like flavored papers).
  • Filters/crutches: a small tightly-rolled paper filter at the mouthpiece end of a joint. Keeps flower out of your mouth and gives the joint structure. Pre-rolled tips are easiest for beginners.

Popular brands: RAW (classic hemp), Elements (rice), OCB (French rice/hemp), Zig-Zag (traditional).

Storage jars & humidity

The single highest-ROI accessory upgrade.

  • Glass jar with a tight lid, sized for your quantity. A mason jar works. Small (¼ pint) for an eighth, medium (½ pint) for a quarter.
  • Boveda 62% humidity pack — $1-2 each, one per jar. Actively maintains 62% relative humidity indefinitely (until the pack dries out — check every 3-6 months).
  • Dark cabinet. Never store on a windowsill or in a clear jar exposed to light.
  • Room temperature. Do not refrigerate — moisture cycling encourages mold.

Batteries for vape carts

See the vape guide for the full battery breakdown. Short version:

  • 510-thread variable-voltage pen, ~$30-50. Look for USB-C charging.
  • Basic 510 pen for $15-25 works fine as a backup or a starter.
  • Proprietary systems (Pax Era, StiiiZy) only if you're committed to that brand's pods.

Nice-to-haves (in descending order of usefulness)

  • Ashtray — any small heat-resistant container. $0-15.
  • Rolling tray — a small metal or wooden tray to keep flower off your table. $10-25. Nice, not necessary.
  • Cleaning kit — isopropyl alcohol + coarse salt for pipes and bongs. Q-tips and iso for carts and grinders. Under $10.
  • Odor-blocking bag / Smell-proof pouch — for storage or transport of open flower. Cannabis flower smells strongly. $10-30.
  • Dry-herb vaporizer — a device that vapes flower without combusting it. Higher entry cost ($100-300 for reputable devices) but delivers smoother vapor and more efficient use of flower. Great once you know you're a regular smoker.
  • Debowler / poker — a small tool to clear ash from pipes and bongs. $5-10.

Common mistakes

MistakeWhat to do instead
Buying a $150 grinder as a beginnerBuy the $15 grinder. Upgrade after a year if you're grinding daily.
Storing flower in a Ziploc bagGlass jar. Ziploc bags don't seal against terpene loss and static clings to trichomes.
Buying a giant bong before knowing if you like bongsTry a joint or pipe first. Bongs are a specific taste.
Not cleaning your pipe / bong / grinderIso-alcohol soak monthly for pipes, weekly for daily-use bongs. Dirty gear tastes terrible.
Buying every accessory marketed to youYou don't need a $200 rolling tray, a $60 hemp lighter, or a $100 grinder to enjoy cannabis. You need the starter kit.
