The biology — why edibles hit different

When you smoke or vape cannabis, THC enters your bloodstream through your lungs. It reaches your brain quickly (seconds) and is metabolized primarily by other pathways.

When you eat cannabis, THC enters your bloodstream through your digestive tract, then passes through your liver before reaching your brain. In the liver, a significant portion of THC gets converted into 11-hydroxy-THC, a metabolite that:

  • Crosses the blood-brain barrier more efficiently than plain THC
  • Produces stronger psychoactive effects, especially body sedation
  • Lasts significantly longer than inhaled THC

This is why a 10mg edible often feels stronger than a joint containing 100mg+ of THC. The metabolic pathway is different, and the resulting compound is different.

When to choose flower

  • You want to feel the effect in seconds and adjust as you go.
  • You want the shortest possible commitment — 1-2 hours in and out.
  • You're new to cannabis. Flower is the most forgiving format for beginners.
  • You want the full ritual, terpene experience, and social dimension.
  • You need to be functional again by bedtime.

When to choose edibles

  • You want a long, mellow experience — 4-8 hours.
  • You cannot smoke (asthma, apartment, medical concerns, personal preference).
  • You need help sleeping — the edible descent tapers into sleep beautifully.
  • You have chronic pain and want longer symptom coverage.
  • You want zero smell and zero visible consumption.
